The trail is a good 12 feet wide, but along some segments, wooden fences have been erected. Their design is good in that they have horizontal handlebar rub strips, but they are close to the edge of the trail -- even when terrain would easily allow wider spacing. AASHTO guidelines specify a minimum setback of two feet to lateral obstructions. The solid, white edge stripes in fenced segments appear to be an attempt to mitigate the close positioning of the fence but do not prevent bicyclists from being forced toward the center of the pavement -- handlebars overhang past bicycle wheels by as much as a foot (30 cm) on either side; bicyclists require additional shy distance for comfort. The dashed centerline is appropariately painted in yellow; some in Massachusetts have been painted in white. Standard edge stripes are white.
